After LASIK Surgery – Common Experiences

After LASIK eye surgery, your vision most likely will be significantly better however may not be clear for the first several hours. For the first few hours after LASIK, you will likely experience a slight sensation similar to having an eyelash in your eye. If you experience some discomfort after the LASIK surgery you may take Tylenol, Advil, Motrin or similar pain relievers.  Do not be alarmed if you experience light sensitivity, tearing and/or dry eye sensation during the first few weeks after the procedure. These are all common symptoms, and part of the post-operative healing process.  The next morning after LASIK surgery, you should notice a positive change in your vision. Plus, you will go to the LASIK surgeon’s office for the first post-operative visit where the doctor examines your eyes and guides you through your healing process.

Most patients are able to see 20/40 or better after LASIK surgery and may even feel comfortable enough to drive the next day.  It is important to attend all post-operative visits after LASIK surgery since vision fluctuations and temporary dryness are common after your procedure.  You may be prescribed eye drops following the procedure to alleviate any discomfort.  Keep your eyes clear of any irritants during the first few weeks post-LASIK surgery. Especially avoid getting foreign objects or substances in your eye for the first week after LASIK surgery other than eye drops. Also, It is important to not wear eye makeup for one week after the procedure. It is fine to wash your face with soap and water but avoid getting soapy water in your eyes.

After LASIK Surgery – Physical Activity

As early as the first day after the procedure, you may resume jogging, weightlifting, or aerobics, but do not increase your level of exercise for two weeks. For your own protection, avoid high-contact activities for the first month after your procedure including: mountain climbing, scuba diving or racquet sports. After your eyes have healed, it is recommended that you wear protective eyewear while playing contact or racquet sports to protect your new eyes. Avoid swimming, hot tubs, saunas or any other contact with contaminated water for several weeks after surgery.
